Devops | Open Mainframe Project Launches Zowe to Advance DevOps

By | News, Zowe

Announced at the Open Source Summit, the Zowe project is being led by IBM, CA Technologies and Rocket Software.

Matt Hogstrom, chief architect for z/OS Systems at IBM, said the goal of the Zowe project is to attract a new generation of IT administrators to the mainframe platforms and make it simpler to include mainframes within the larger scope of an integrated set of DevOps process spanning multiple platforms.

Heise Developer | Zowe project gives the mainframe a GUI

By | News, Zowe

The Linux Foundation’s Open Mainframe Project recently introduced Zowe, an approach designed to bring a graphical web interface to the mainframe for the first time. While it was previously possible to run a Linux operating system with a GUI on a mainframe, IBM’s central zOS mainframe operating system did not have a graphical user interface.

IT Toolbox | Z is for Zowe

By | News, Zowe

You may have heard about Zowe recently, but do you know what it is and how it can help your mainframe environment and your organization? Let’s have a look.

Firstly, let’s look at the biggest problem facing mainframe sites, and that’s an ageing population of experts. Many of the mainframe geeks, gurus, and mavens are beginning to start thinking about their pensions and their retirement. One solution to the problem is to automate as much as possible, but that doesn’t solve the problem of how do you create new applications or update existing applications to work in new ways, such as cloud, mobile working, or incorporating public APIs to create some new app? How do you ensure that organizations can digitally transform to ensure that they can still operate successfully in the fast-evolving digital world? The answer is to come up with a way of making everything on Z available to people used to working in other ways. And in many ways, that’s what Zowe is.

Dancing Dinasur | Can Zowe Bring Young Developers to the Z?

By | News, Zowe

Are you ever frustrated by the Z? As powerful as it gets mainframes remain a difficult nut to crack, particularly for newcomers who have grown up with easier technologies. Even Linux on Z is not as simple or straightforward as on other platforms. This poses a problem for Z-based shops that are scrambling to replace retiring mainframers.

Certainly other organizations, mainly mainframe ISVs like Compuware and Syncsort, have succeeded in extending the GUI deeper into the Z but that alone is not enough. It remains too difficult for newcomers to take their newly acquired computer talents and readily apply them to the mainframe. Maybe Zowe can change this.

Server Watch | Mainframes Get GUI with Zowe Project |

By | News, Zowe

For the last 50 years, mainframes have literally been the big iron systems that have helped power critical elements of IT infrastructure. Yet despite the core role that mainframes have held, the primary interface to the mainframe throughout its history has been the “green screen” command line.

At the Open Source Summit, the Linux Foundation’s Open Mainframe project announced the new Zowe effort, which for the first time brings a real graphical user interface to the mainframe. The Open Mainframe project itself was first announced at Linux Foundation’s LinuxCon 2015 event in Seattle.

By | News, Zowe

The Open Mainframe Project, which is backed by IBM and CA Technologies amongst others, introduced Zowe, a new open source software framework that bridges the divide between modern applications and the mainframe.

Zowe is the first open source project based on z/OS. Its mission is to enable better integration capabilities for z/OS through an extensible open source framework and the creation of an ecosystem of independent Software Vendors (ISVs), System Integrators, clients and end users.

LaMagIt | Open Source: Zowe, IBM, CA and Rocket Software Want to Dust z / OS

By | News, Zowe

IBM, CA Technologies and Rocket Software have decided to give z / OS, the flagship OS of IBM mainframes , a second wind through the Zowe open source project. Objective: provide the OS with an open source framework on which to rely to develop modern applications, with modern technologies, and open it to younger profiles. In short, prepare z / OS for the transformation when, in fact, IBM mainframes are still powering a number of critical processes – particularly in the telcos, banking and insurance sectors.
